Outer Banks ESA "Riders Cup" Format and Info

For any questions regarding the ESA "Riders Cup", please contact the contest coordinator Jason Breiholz at jason_breiholz@charter.net.

Basic Rules and Format:

1. All ESA rules apply, including membership.
2. Only official team riders can score points for their surf shop, so no "beach entry team riders"! Hopefully, this will encourage the local surf shops to send out their best riders to compete in the local contests and get more local surfers involved in the ESA. It may also encourage some surf shop to look for good competitive talent.
3. An official list of team riders will need to be submitted to Jason Breiholz. We know most of who rides for each local surf shop, but we may not know all of them! Please submit the list ASAP either by email or bring the list to the next ESA contest.
4. Each surf shop will get points for a rider that finishes in the top 6 of their division (top 12 for open division) at the end of the season.
5. The best 10 standings for each surf shop will be calculated for the total points. Example, Johnny Tuberider surfs for Wings Surf Shop. He finishes 1st place in 3 different divisions (shortboard, longboard, bellyboard). That one team riders accounts for 3 of the 10 standings towards the total points, so he has earned 3,000 points for Wings Surf Shop. If the other Wings team riders do not complete the season in the top 6 of their division, then Wings Surf Shop ends up with only 3,000 points for their total. This will essentially eliminate winning the Rider Cup by sheer number of team riders that compete.
6. If a surf shop has only 4 team riders competing, then those 4 team riders can represent the entire 10 standings as long as they compete in a various divisions. This will also encourage surfers to compete in more than 1 division.
7. If a surf shop cannot get enough surfers to compete to make up the 10 standings, then the surf shop will only have the total number of points gained by their team riders standing. Another example, Sunsations Surf Shop has 2 team riders competing in 4 different divisions. (let's say boys, menehune longboard, grandmasters and masters longboard). Both surfers for Sunsations win both of their divisions they compete in, so thats 4 first place standings which would equate to 4,000 points. Even though they only had 4 of 10 standings at the end of the season, they still ended up with a decent amount of points that could win the ESA Riders Cup. Essentially, a surf shop with a few really good riders in a several divisions could win the cup.

Moral of the story: Local surf shops need to get their team riders competing and help to build the local ESA district

More information to follow as this competition unfolds throughout the season. Keep checking back for updates. Three of seven contests have already been completed!

Attention Surf Shop Team Managers and Team Riders

The Outer Banks ESA District Surf Shop Riders Cup will go down this season as an experimental contest that puts local surf shop team riders battling for points at each of the local ESA contests. The "Riders Cup" will be awarded to the surf shop that accumulates the most points at the end of the season from the final standings of each of their team riders. The point system is still being worked out, and once finalized, each team member will be awarded a certin amount of points depending on how they finish within the district standings.

**All team managers need to contact Jason Breiholz at jason_breiholz@charter.net so you can provide a legitimate list of team riders. An announcement will be made at the next contest, so all surf shops need to try and send a representative so we can discuss details.

Contest #3 Results

Contest #3 of the district season took place down in Hatteras in at the old lighthouse location. The surf overall was waist high with some occasionally bigger sets. The wind and tide came up in the afternoon making the conditions really tough to compete in, but it was another successful contest completed!
Another great breakfast and lunch from the Hatteras Island Church! They have really helped out the last 2 contests so please be sure to thank them!!

Contest #2 Results

Contest #2 Summary:
The second contest of the district season was held in Rodanthe at Ramp 23 in fun, waist to stomach high surf. The surface conditions were a little bumpy, making the waves a touch tricky to surf, but fun was had by all. Some of the standout performers were Reese Patterson, winning 2 divisions as well as making the Open Final and Chris Macdonald for winning a very tough Open Final heat by a narrow margin over Sean Martin and Pat Mcmanus.
