The basic idea was to put surfers that were sponsored by the local surf shops in a year long competition that earned points through the ESA district contests. As each surf shop team rider earned points through the season, the final standings of each surfer in their district division converted to points towards the surf shop they were sponsored by. At the end of the season, all the team riders points were tallied and an overall champion was crowned. Breiholz was noted in saying "It was a great experience to put together a competition of this kind and I look forward to making this an annual event that motivates surf shop team riders to represent their surf shops through local competition. It seemed that all the surf shop team riders and managers were stoked on the idea and I'd like to thank our district directors Jay Hawekotte and Julie Leavel for letting me incorporate this event into our district contests."

Corolla Surf Shop Owner, Gary Smith, and team manager, Greg Sherman were very pleased with the results as Corolla Surf Shop just squeaked out a victory over The Pit Surf Shop and Whalebone Surf Shop. Smith noted that he was very pleased with how Sherman has reorganized the team over the past two years.

Below are the final results of the Surf Shop Team Rider Challenge.

Final Standings
1st Place-Corolla Surf Shop
2nd Place- Pit Surf Shop
3rd Place- Whalebone Surf Shop
4th Place- WRV
5th Place- Secret Spot
6th Place- OBBC
7th Place- 158
8th Place- DVO

Happy Turkey Day

End of year banquet

Our end of the year banquet to celebrate are season is set for Sunday, December 6th at 5:00 at the Kitty Hawk Pier House. $13 for each person. The Outer Banks district has scored in the last 3 events, having really fun conditions for each contest. For the final contest of the 2009-20010 district season, the surf was 2'-3' with the occasional 4' set. The winds were forecasted to be strong from the south, but held off just enough to keep conditions clean to semi-clean all day. The lowering tide during the contest produced some dumpy barrels, but unlike contest #6 a few weeks ago, no boards or bones were broken. As a bonus, Seth Burnett was on site to catch all the action. Both adults and groms joined in for 2 heats to battle for the "Best Costume Award" and "Best Trick in a Costume Award". For the groms, Morgan Taylor Leavel won "Best Trick" as he did his best impression of "Captain Morgan". In the adult category, Joe Gillen won "Best Trick" during his heat. Best Costumes were awarded to Jackie Thomas for her "Jackie Chan" costume and Elizabeth Payne as a "Tacky Tourist".

Who would win in a fight? In the largest and most competitive division, the Open division, the same faces seemed to make the final. Pat Mcmanus edged out Jason Breiholz for his third consecutive victory. Julian Payne finished a close third and other finalists were Joe Gillen, Reese Patterson, and Prescott Metcalf.

In other highly competitive divisions, the Juniors battled it out with Julian Payne coming out on top over Morgan Taylor Leavel. Pauls put up an excellent fight against Breiholz as he caught several high scoring waves, but it was Breiholz's first and last wave of the heat that put him in first securing the divisional title.

Reese Patterson scored double victories for the day in the Grandmasters and Masters Longboard division.

The awards banquet is scheduled to be December 5th or 6th at the Hilton in Kitty Hawk. The top 6 surfers in each division will be recognized and district also gives several specialty awards. The official site has not been determined as the contest directors will look for the best possible conditions. Good luck to the Outer Banks team and our ESA District members that are part of the team. (Julian Payne, MT Leavel, Reese Patterson, Pat McManus, Jason Breiholz, Chris Macdonald, Jesse Fernandez)

A new format to the contest was added late this week due to the change in the number of surfers from originally 20 down to only a team of 15 surfers from each county(VB and OBX). Contest directors have decided to have an additional qualifier or "surf off" for the remaining 3 spots on the team. The 8 qualifiers and alternates from the Outer Banks Pro Contest will surf a heat in the morning and the 3 highest placers in that heat are added to the 12 invitees for the team of 15 in the "Main Event".

Stay informed by visiting www.surfkdh.com or www.easternsurf.com

Surf Shop Team Riders Cup Update After Contest 6

Well, as the unofficial "Director" of the inaugural Surf Shop Team Riders Cup, I've come across several challenges and questions over the course of the season. Concerns such as "how will I calculate the points for each team?", "who rides for what shop?", "what happens when team riders transfer?", "is it fair to count all the points for each team rider?", and the list goes on. But since this was my idea and I'm running this show, I'm going to establish the rules. I've talked with several team managers, riders, surf shop owners, local surfing professionals, and friends to get advice on how to do this thing right. Obviously, the rules and format may change over time, the ASP World Tour format sure has, so for the inaugural season I've decided on the following "official" format below to establish the winner. Rule #5 summarizes how the winner will be determined. I will post a points update after contest 6 points have been calculated. Remember, the final cup standings can only be determined AFTER all contests have been completed.

Stay Stoked,
Jason Breiholz

Surf Shop Team Rider Cup Basic Rules:

1. Only team riders can score points for each surf shop. Team riders must be officially reported by a team manager or surf shop owner. If a surfer if falsely reported as a team rider, the shop will be disqualified for the season.
2. Team riders must finish the season in the top 6 of their division for their points to count. Except in the Open Division, the top 10 will get points toward the surf shop cup.
3. If a team rider transfers sponsorship to a different surf shop during the season, the points will be equally divided among BOTH surf shops, regardless of the number of contests surfed.
4. If a team rider is dismissed from sponsorship from a surf shop, only the points they have accumulated up to the point of dismissal will count.
**5. The total number of points that a surfer accumulates throughout the entire season in each division will also be the total number of points the surf shop will accumulate towards the cup. For example, if a surfer finishes the season in 1st place with 5423 points in their division, then the surf shop will get 5423 points towards the cup.
6. The surf shop with the highest total number of points from team riders finishing in the top 6 of their division will be determined as the cup winner.
7. Any surf shop has a period of 1 week following the announcement of the winner to call for a recount of points.
8. The cup director has the authority to change, alter, or add rules as see fit. Any rule changes or alterations will be posted on the district website.

Contest #6 Results

Contest #6 of the Outer Banks ESA District season was held Saturday October 10th at Ramp 23 in Salvo. To the surprise of the directors and contestants, the swell arrived just in time as the contest saw glassy 2'-3' surf with occasional 4' sets. The winds and tide were a little tricky in the morning heats and the glare from the lowering fall sun angle created challenging judging conditions as well. But by mid-morning the surf shaped up and the contestants were stoked to see fun waves for the second contest in a row. As the tide pushed in during the late morning, some of the bigger sets showed just how much swell was pounding on the shallow sandbar as it claimed 3 broken boards for the day.

Though the turnout for the contest was slightly lower in number compared to the contests held in the summer, the level of surfing was definitely not lacking by any means. Most of the more dedicated surfers in the district attended the contest to score points as well as some fun left barrels and rippable right-handers. Some of the standout surfers in the Open division were Sean Martin, Pat McManus, Julian Payne, Jason Breiholz, Prescott Metcalf, and Reese Patterson. In the highly contested final, McManus was able to claim the win over Martin with several solid scores on some of the better left handers that came through. Though there was a tie at the end of the heat, McManus was able to pull out the win. The other five finalists were left scrambling for a back up scores as McManus and Martin seemed to get every set that rolled through the contest line-up. The points race for the open division has become interesting as there were many changes in the top 6 leaders for the season, but its McManus that still holds the lead in that division. Contest 7, scheduled for October 31st, will be very important in deciding the top finishers of the highly competitive division.

The contest proved to be pivotal in each divisional points race as some upsets and strong finishes saw some changes in the season standings going into the last contest of the season. Notable finishes for contest #6 included Grant Tyler in the Boys division who claimed his first win of the season that will see him rocket up in the points ratings. Julian Payne and MT Leavel continued to show there dominance of the JR. mens divisions, but both surfers are closely battling for the prestigious JR. Mens district title. Lewis Molton in the Sr. Mens division scored a huge upset win over Jason Breiholz. Though Breiholz has the district title locked by winning all but 2 of the contests, Molton takes a leap up in the points rating, as well does Brian Breiholz finishing 3rd in Sr. Mens and 1st in open bodyboard. Reese Patterson again claimed double wins in Masters Longboard and Grandmasters to increase his points lead over Joe Gillen in both divisions. In the Menehune division, Quintin Turko posted his 5th win in a row for that division, locking down the district title before contest 7 even runs. Ray Gray posts another win over Gary Smith in the Legends division, making that a perfect season so far for Gray have won every contest in that division.

Menehune
1 Quentin Turko
2 Jahfar Christ
3 Nohea Futrell
4 Beau Douglas

3A Boys
1 Grant Tyler
2 Ryan Jones
3 Joey Gillen
4 Hunter Matthews

3A Juniors
1 Morgan-Taylor Leavel
2 Julian Payne
3 Dillon Pratt
4 Josh Beveridge
5 Michael Foard
6 Max Lingg
7 Brandon Harrison

3A Men
1 Sean Martin

Masters
1 Prescott Metcalf

Senior Men
1 Lewis Molton
2 Jason Breiholz
3 Brian Breiholz
4 Brad Higginbotham
5 Scott Williams

Grandmasters
1 Reese Patterson
2 Jay Hawekotte
3 Joe Gillen
4 Ricky Brake

Legends
1 Ray Gray
2 Gary Smith

Open Shortboard
1 Pat McManus
2 Sean Martin
3 Julian Payne
4 Jason Breiholz
5 Prescott Metcalf
6 Reese Patterson

Girls
1

Jr Women
1 Jackie Thomas

Women
1 Jeanne-Marie Destefano

Ladies
1 Jessica Delosreyes
2 Chrissy Swain

Menehune Longboard
1 Ryan Jones
2 Beau Douglas
3 Joey Gillen
4 Hunter Matthews

Jr Longboard
1 Morgan-Taylor Leavel

Mens Longboard
1 Prescott Metcalf

Masters Longboard
1 Reese Patterson
2 Joe Gillen
3 Brian Breiholz
4 Bob White
5 Scott Williams
6 Rascoe Hunt
7 Jason Breiholz

Legends Longboard
1 Ray Gray
2 Jay Hawekotte
3 Gary Smith

Ladies Longboard
1

Menehune Bodyboard
1 Joey Gillen
2 Beau Douglas
3 Hunter Matthews

Open Bodyboard
1 Brian Breiholz
2 Charles Shelton
3 Joey Gillen
4 Morgan-Taylor Leavel

Contest #7

Contest #7 is scheduled for October 31st. After about an hour of debate to hold the contest at Lillian street in Kitty Hawk where the waves were good, but soft and breaking on the outer bars, the district directors and several contestants decided to move to the alternate location. The decision was a good one as they found chest to shoulder high barrels, with occasionally bigger sets dredging on the sand bar. The dredging surf claimed one injury as Outer Banks ESA director, Jay Hawekotte, was clipped by his board on a gnarly set, sending him to the emergency room for 6 stitches in the side of his head. The toughness of Hawekotte prevailed as he came back to the contest site to help out in finishing the contest.
Several local surf photographers showed up for a few to snap some shots of the contest. The district would really like to thank Seth Burnett , Lori Douglas, and Jared Floyd for getting some really good pics. Several divisions have had some dominant performers that have taken a substantial points lead in some of the larger contested divisions. Quentin Turko in Menehune, Christian VanVliet in Boys, Jason Breiholz in Sr. Men's, and MT Leavel in Jr. Longboard have each won 3 of the first 4 contests in their respectful division. With only 3 more contests left in the season, these surfers have a comfortable lead in points for winning a seasonal district title.

In closer points races, Josh Beveridge and Sterling King are tied with 3710 points each in the highly competitive Jr. Men's division. Prescott Metcalf has a slim 100 point lead over John Ritter in the Master's division. Jay Hawekotte has a narrow 71 point lead over Ray Gray in the Legend's Longboard division. In Open Bodyboard, Charles Shelton has a narrow 209 point lead over Brian Breiholz. And in the largest and most competitive divsions, Pat Mcmanus has a small 217.5 point lead over Outer Banks grom phenom Julian Payne.

There are many other divisions that have some great point races going on at this point in the season. With each surfer competing for qualification into next year's Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships, every district contest proves to be important this time in the season. With 3 contests remaining, there is still opportunity for some big changes in points leaders and some big upsets in each division.

Here's the Google Docs link to the updated points race: http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=t1HN_eyX02leewF-7HtZaUA&output=html

Contest 4 Results

Contest #4 of the Outer Banks ESA went down on Ramp 34 last Saturday in Avon. The surf was 2'-3' out of southeast with occasionally bigger sets. The sandbar location wasn't the best the Outer Banks has to offer but there were plenty of waves to surf throughout the day. The incoming high tide later in the afternoon forced contestants to surf shore pound during some of the later final heats, but the surfers made the best of it. Julian Payne had the biggest casualty of day, breaking his board during the first 5 minutes of the Open Men's Final.

Menehune
1 Quentin Turko
2 Taylor Carvajal
3 Nohea Futrell
4 Jahfar Christ
5 Beau Douglas
6 Levi Christ

3A Boys
1 Christian VanVliet
2 Daniel Brake
3 Ryan Jones
4 Spencer Wilkinson
T5 Grant Tyler
T5 Chase Travers

3A Juniors
1 Sterling King
2 Josh Beveridge
3 Julian Payne
4 Morgan-Taylor Leavel
5 Michael Foard
6 Jennings Sessoms

3A Men
1 Thomas Bruce
2 Sean Martin
3 Barry Price, Jr.

Masters
1 Prescott Metcalf
2 John Ritter

Senior Men
1 Jason Breiholz
2 Rascoe Hunt
3 Scott Williams
4 Greg Stewart
5 Lewis Molton
6 Brian Breiholz

Grandmasters
1 Joe Gillen
2 Jay Hawekotte
3 Carmen Garcia, Sr.
4 Ricky Brake

Legends
1 Ray Gray
2 Gary Smith

Open Shortboard
1 Sean Martin
2 Morgan-Taylor Leavel
3 Joe Gillen
4 Julian Payne
T5 Barry Price, Jr.
T5 Sterling King

Jr Women
1 Jackie Thomas

Women
1 Jeanne-Marie Destefano

Ladies
1 Carrie Travers

Menehune Longboard
1 Ryan Jones
2 Joey Gillen
3 Beau Douglas
4 Chase Travers
5 Hunter Matthews
6 Sam Blanchard

Jr Longboard
1 Julian Payne
2 Morgan-Taylor Leavel
3 Hunter Whitfield

Mens Longboard
1 Carmen Garcia, Jr.
2 Prescott Metcalf
3 Steve Umphlett

Masters Longboard
1 Rascoe Hunt
2 Joe Gillen
3 Greg Sherman
4 Brian Breiholz
5 Jason Breiholz
6 Scott Williams

Legends Longboard
1 Carmen Garcia, Sr.
2 Jay Hawekotte
3 Gary Smith
4 Ray Gray

Ladies Longboard
1 Carrie Travers

Menehune Bodyboard
1 Jordan Rodriguez
2 Sam Blanchard
3 Andrew Grant
4 Beau Douglas
5 Joey Gillen
6 Spencer Wilkinson

Open Bodyboard
1 John Joyce
2 Morgan-Taylor Leavel
3 Brian Breiholz
4 Charles Shelton
5 Jordan Rodriguez
6 Joey Gillen
7 Hunter Whitfield

Outer Banks ESA "Riders Cup" Format and Info

For any questions regarding the ESA "Riders Cup", please contact the contest coordinator Jason Breiholz at jason_breiholz@charter.net.

Basic Rules and Format:

1. All ESA rules apply, including membership.
2. Only official team riders can score points for their surf shop, so no "beach entry team riders"! Hopefully, this will encourage the local surf shops to send out their best riders to compete in the local contests and get more local surfers involved in the ESA. It may also encourage some surf shop to look for good competitive talent.
3. An official list of team riders will need to be submitted to Jason Breiholz. We know most of who rides for each local surf shop, but we may not know all of them! Please submit the list ASAP either by email or bring the list to the next ESA contest.
4. Each surf shop will get points for a rider that finishes in the top 6 of their division (top 12 for open division) at the end of the season.
5. The best 10 standings for each surf shop will be calculated for the total points. Example, Johnny Tuberider surfs for Wings Surf Shop. He finishes 1st place in 3 different divisions (shortboard, longboard, bellyboard). That one team riders accounts for 3 of the 10 standings towards the total points, so he has earned 3,000 points for Wings Surf Shop. If the other Wings team riders do not complete the season in the top 6 of their division, then Wings Surf Shop ends up with only 3,000 points for their total. This will essentially eliminate winning the Rider Cup by sheer number of team riders that compete.
6. If a surf shop has only 4 team riders competing, then those 4 team riders can represent the entire 10 standings as long as they compete in a various divisions. This will also encourage surfers to compete in more than 1 division.
7. If a surf shop cannot get enough surfers to compete to make up the 10 standings, then the surf shop will only have the total number of points gained by their team riders standing. Another example, Sunsations Surf Shop has 2 team riders competing in 4 different divisions. (let's say boys, menehune longboard, grandmasters and masters longboard). Both surfers for Sunsations win both of their divisions they compete in, so thats 4 first place standings which would equate to 4,000 points. Even though they only had 4 of 10 standings at the end of the season, they still ended up with a decent amount of points that could win the ESA Riders Cup. Essentially, a surf shop with a few really good riders in a several divisions could win the cup.

Moral of the story: Local surf shops need to get their team riders competing and help to build the local ESA district

More information to follow as this competition unfolds throughout the season. Keep checking back for updates. The "Riders Cup" will be awarded to the surf shop that accumulates the most points at the end of the season from the final standings of each of their team riders. The point system is still being worked out, and once finalized, each team member will be awarded a certin amount of points depending on how they finish within the district standings.

**All team managers need to contact Jason Breiholz at jason_breiholz@charter.net so you can provide a legitimate list of team riders. An announcement will be made at the next contest, so all surf shops need to try and send a representative so we can discuss details.

Easterns Information

Please check the ESA website, http://www.surfesa.org/, for information regarding the Eastern Championships.
